We are a research group in the
Department of Chemistry at Clemson University. We use single-molecule force-applicaiton techniques—also known as "force spectroscopy"—to study the physical chemistry and biophysics of membrane proteins. We are looking for undergraduate and graduate researchers to join us; please
get in touch if you are interested.
News
- David's review article on single-molecule force studies of membrane proteins has been published in Chemical Reviews. Writing it was a fascinating opportunity to revisit work over the past 25 years from the groups of Müller, Gaub, Yoon, Min, Perkins, and others. Here's to the next 25 years of membrane-protein SMFS! - Congratulations to Chris Hatchell, whose article on AFM cantilever modification has been published in Review of Scientific Instruments. This is the first paper published based on work done in our research group! [June 2025]
- Welcome Carrie Baumgardner, a medical-biophysics Ph.D. student who has joined the group [May 2025]
- Our lab is honored to receive the CAREER award, a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation that will support our studies of the biophysical mechanisms of membrane-protein folding as well as incorporation of single-molecule concepts into undergraduate and graduate physical-chemistry curriculum.
